In the Second Round of the 2025-26 EFL Cup, Manchester United lost to EFL League Two side Grimsby Town in a penalty shootout—marking the first time in the club’s history that Manchester United has been eliminated by a fourth-tier league team in the EFL Cup.
Playing away to EFL League Two outfit Grimsby Town in this match, Manchester United trailed 0-2 at halftime. In the second half, however, goals from Mbeumo and Maguire saw the Red Devils level the score at 2-2 after 90 minutes of regular play.
In the subsequent penalty shootout, Manchester United was defeated 12-11 by Grimsby Town.
According to statistics, this is the first instance in Manchester United’s history where the club has been knocked out of the EFL Cup by a fourth-tier league side.
