Frenkie de Jong has agreed to extend his contract with Barcelona until 2029, while also consenting to further spread the previously deferred salaries into the new deal.

A few days ago, De Jong assured Barcelona of the same commitment he had conveyed to the club internally: he would finalize the contract extension with Barcelona. The Dutch midfielder is happy at Barcelona and in the city, and to push through the extension, he has even sacked his former agent. The extension agreement has been reached, which is something the club urgently needs to accomplish in this summer’s transfer window.

Barcelona director Deco has directly negotiated the extension with De Jong, following the same pattern as the previous contract talks with Ronald Araújo. During the negotiations, the two sides discussed various matters, to the extent that De Jong even set aside his agency and participated in the talks personally.

The framework of the new contract is clear: De Jong’s extension will run until 2029. Most crucially, De Jong has once again agreed to defer the salaries specified in his previous contract and spread them into the upcoming new deal. According to insiders involved in the negotiations, De Jong’s move will free up considerable financial space for Barcelona, which may play a vital role in the club’s player registration process this season.

De Jong is aware that he is a key player in head coach Hansi Flick’s plans and believes Barcelona now has a successful project. For this reason, he has been willing to offer help openly and will sign a contract to remain at the club.

De Jong’s current contract with Barcelona is set to expire on June 30, 2026. As early as 2020, De Jong had already extended his contract with Barcelona once and agreed to defer part of his salary to help ease the club’s financial pressure. Currently, De Jong’s annual salary at Barcelona is €19 million, but due to the previous salary deferrals, Barcelona originally needed to pay De Jong €37.5 million in wages this season.
