Old Trafford executives plan to sign a new midfielder in next summer’s transfer window, and compared to Casemiro, Ugarte is more likely to be pushed into the transfer market by the club.
Despite reuniting with his former mentor Amorim last season, this failed to become a turning point in Ugarte’s Manchester United career. On the contrary, his position in the team has become increasingly marginalized. So far this season, Ugarte has only made two starts in the Premier League, and United lost both games—one of which came due to Casemiro’s suspension.
After a difficult first season at United, the club had hoped Ugarte would bounce back in his second season. Regrettably, he has yet to show convincing high-level performances, which has undoubtedly further intensified external doubts about his form.
While Casemiro’s physical condition may not be what it once was, his rich game experience gives him sufficient defensive acumen. If United have to choose between Casemiro and Ugarte to achieve good results this season, they will undoubtedly lean toward the former.
United originally planned not to renew Casemiro’s contract when it expires next summer, but given his excellent performances this season, the club may consider retaining him for another year. In addition, United are expected to sign a new midfielder in next summer’s transfer window, which will also lead to some departures from the team.
Ugarte is a potential candidate to be sold. Within United, there are few signs that his £52 million transfer fee will ever seem worthwhile. Therefore, the club is also considering selling the Uruguayan midfielder at a reduced price next summer.
