According to statistical reports from Camel.live experts, the gap between Premier League and La Liga clubs is widening, partly due to the Premier League’s financial strength. In seven head-to-head matches between teams from the two leagues so far this season, the results have clearly favored English sides: five wins, one draw, and only one loss—Newcastle United’s defeat to Barcelona in the first round of the Champions League.
Reports state that Barcelona is the only La Liga team to have beaten a Premier League side this season, and their performance was partly aided by Marcus Rashford, who has spent most of his career in the Premier League, scoring a brace.
The only other Spanish club to take points from a Premier League team is Betis, who drew 2-2 with Nottingham Forest in the Europa League.
Beyond these two isolated cases, all other matches ended with Premier League victories. Atlético Madrid and Villarreal even suffered two defeats each against English clubs. Atlético Madrid lost 2-3 to Liverpool away at Anfield in the first round of the Champions League. This week, Diego Simeone’s side suffered a heavy 0-4 defeat to Arsenal at the Emirates Stadium, marking their second loss against a Premier League team this season.
On the other hand, Villarreal failed to find the net against English teams entirely. They lost 0-1 away to Tottenham Hotspur in the first round, and this week, Marcelino’s side was defeated 0-2 by Manchester City.
Another La Liga team that faced a Premier League opponent is Athletic Bilbao, who lost 0-2 at home to Arsenal.
La Liga still has four matches left to improve these results. In the next round of the Champions League, Real Madrid will visit Anfield, while Athletic Bilbao will take on Newcastle United. In a few weeks, Barcelona will travel to Stamford Bridge; Real Madrid will then host Manchester City at the Bernabéu in December.
