Ten Hag Could Be Sacked as Early as Today; Leverkusen Unwilling to Continue Its Mistake

Klaus Markthaus

Erik ten Hag, head coach of Bayer Leverkusen, could be sacked as early as today. A coach leaving his post after just two matchdays in the Bundesliga is unprecedented for someone who took over a new team at the start of the season.

It would come as a huge surprise if Leverkusen were to express confidence in ten Hag after the crisis began.

For the Dutchman, continuing to manage Leverkusen is almost impossible; his list of mistakes is already too long. Leverkusen’s senior officials discussed the coach on Sunday, and they are well aware of this fact.

Appointing the former Manchester United manager was a wrong decision from the start. ten Hag was neither the first nor the second choice to succeed double-winning coach Xabi Alonso (43), who moved to Real Madrid.

Leverkusen had previously wanted to sign Cesc Fàbregas (38) from Como and had received confirmation from the Spaniard. However, after weeks of negotiations, Como refused to let the accomplished manager leave.

Since Fàbregas holds shares in the Italian club, he did not want to annoy the club’s owner.

Clubs such as RB Leipzig and Inter Milan also faced the same issue, as they had also tried to sign Fàbregas. Due to time constraints, Leverkusen decided to appoint ten Hag at the end of May. Now, this decision may be reversed soon.

Leverkusen’s training session is scheduled for 1:30 p.m. on Monday. It remains to be seen whether ten Hag will still be in charge of the team.
