Bayern Munich head coach Vincent Kompany attended the pre-match press conference for the first match of the new Champions League season against Chelsea today. During the press conference, a reporter asked Kompany about the differences between the Bundesliga and the Premier League.
A reporter asked: “It seems that the Bundesliga is not highly regarded in England, where it is often referred to as a 'farmers' league'. You have a good understanding of both leagues. What is your view on the level of the Bundesliga?”
In response, Kompany said: “But just look at how many players they buy from the Bundesliga? And how much money they spend on Bundesliga players? I am from Belgium, a small country. In Belgium, people always pay attention to other major countries, and we respect every league. In Germany, people pay great attention to the Bundesliga; in England, people focus heavily on the Premier League.”
Regarding the huge financial advantage of Premier League teams, Kompany stated: “Obviously, there is a huge financial gap between the Premier League and other leagues. We have to think about how to address this issue. The Bundesliga indeed has many talented players, and English teams also buy a lot of players from here. But tomorrow's match is not the Bundesliga vs. the Premier League; it's Bayern Munich vs. Chelsea.”
