The senior management of Real Madrid has decided to bid farewell to two members of the team’s defensive line next summer, namely David Alaba and Antonio Rüdiger.
The decision not to renew Alaba’s contract comes as no surprise, as the Austrian international has long been struggling with form and fitness issues.
However, the situation regarding Rüdiger is more notable. The German center-back failed to reach his best form in the 2024/25 season; his performances were severely affected by injuries, and he eventually had to undergo surgical treatment.
Prior to this, the former Chelsea player was widely regarded as a leader in Real Madrid’s defense. Nevertheless, in the plans of new head coach Xabi Alonso, Éder Militão and Dean Huijsen option have now been deemed priorities over Rüdiger.
Coupled with the fact that the club is looking for targets to strengthen its defense for the 2026/27 season, the 32-year-old player is likely to leave the team as a free agent, together with his defensive partner Alaba.
