With the position of Manchester United manager Rúben Amorim hanging by a thread, several figures – including former England manager Gareth Southgate, Crystal Palace boss Oliver Glasner, and Fulham manager Marco Silva – are being considered as candidates for the club's new managerial role.
Oliver Glasner
The Crystal Palace manager has recently enhanced his coaching reputation by transforming his team into a well-organized and efficient unit. He led Crystal Palace to win the FA Cup title in May – a historic achievement.
The Austrian has enjoyed successful cooperation with a tight-knit team, getting the best out of his players despite minimal rotation. Furthermore, the tactical system he employs is very similar to the one Amorim has been trying to implement at Manchester United. If the club ultimately decides to sack Amorim, appointing Glasner could ensure a smooth transition for Manchester United.
Michael Carrick
This former Manchester United midfielder has been out of work since leaving Middlesbrough in June and has not yet found a new role. The 44-year-old coach spent two and a half years in charge of Middlesbrough but departed after failing to guide the team to the Championship play-offs last season.
Carrick previously served as Manchester United's interim manager between José Mourinho's departure and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's appointment, and he continued in the interim role after the Norwegian was sacked. As a player, he spent 12 years at the club, and has spent most of his post-retirement career working as a coach at Manchester United. However, there are still questions over whether he has sufficient experience to manage Manchester United on a permanent basis.
Gareth Southgate
Southgate has been out of work since stepping down as England manager last summer. This is not the first time he has been linked with the Manchester United job; he previously attracted interest from Ineos. Moreover, as a Manchester United shareholder, Sir Jim Ratcliffe is a supporter of Southgate, and Southgate was already under consideration last year before Amorim was selected to replace Erik ten Hag.
The 55-year-old manager earned widespread praise for his work with the England national team, where he built strong relationships with players and established himself as an effective communicator. He spent eight years in charge of the Three Lions.
Marco Silva
Silva boasts extensive Premier League experience, having managed Everton, Watford, and Hull City before taking the helm at Fulham in 2021. This long-standing presence in the Premier League has equipped him with profound knowledge of the competition, and the duration of his tenure with the same club ranks third in the Premier League, behind only Pep Guardiola and Mikel Arteta.
Mauricio Pochettino
Since his successful spell at Tottenham Hotspur, Pochettino has also been highly sought after by several top-tier clubs. However, his managerial tenures at Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) and Chelsea proved unsuccessful. Recently, he has also been under pressure in his role with the United States men's national soccer team.
